"Discipline is not a nasty word."
What does this mean to you?
From my point of view: This is a Pat Riley quote. I agree with Coach Riley, as do Coach Wooden, Coach K, Coach Dunge, and many more.
“Affirmation without discipline is the beginning of delusion.”
What does this mean to you?
Dave’s point of view: It is telling a spoiled brat that they are a good kid when they grind the Play-doh into the carpet.
"Cheerfulness in most cheerful people is the rich and satisfying result of strenuous discipline."
What does this mean to you?
Dave’s point of view: Those who are cheerful in the face of challenges are not delusional. They have confidence and certainty that they can overcome any obstacle because they have discipline and conviction.
"Effective leadership is putting first things first. Effective management is discipline, i.e., carrying it out."
What does this mean to you?
Dave’s point of view: This is a Stephen Covey quote. Setting the tone is leadership, but to carry it out requires discipline.
"Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. It is remembering what you want."
What does this mean to you?
Dave’s point of view: Every accomplishment of a goal requires commitment to that goal, and the discipline to keep going to reach the goal.
"Business requires discipline and focus. So IF there isn't a competitive reason to grow, you must adjust your strategy, your focus, and your discipline to create an internal competitive reason to grow."
What does this mean to you?
Dave’s point of view: Situations change, competition changes, the market changes. Your primary strategy must be to watch the market, find out what the market wants, and deliver what the market wants. IF you don’t see a competitive reason, look to the market and create the reason.
"Discipline is based on pride, on meticulous attention to detail, and on mutual respect and confidence. Discipline must be a habit so ingrained that it is stronger than the excitement of the goal or the fear of failure."
What does this mean to you?
Dave’s point of view: Are you proud of your failures? Is your team proud of their failures? Are they proud of letting the rest of the team down? Without pride and respect, there is no discipline.
"I hate committing myself to anything. It's probably the lack of discipline, honestly. I'm probably a spoiled brat worried about getting my way every time."
What does this mean to you?
Dave’s point of view: This is a Cameron Diaz quote. Her lack of commitment and discipline is something that hurts her career. Who on your team could have said this? Are they a team player, able to step in when needed?
Your victory depends on the discipline you and your team develop.
Without commitment and discipline:
there is no bridge between your goals and accomplishment
there is no pride
there is no mutual respect
there is no confidence
there is no focus
there is no growth
there is no success.
What you get is the failure of a spoiled brat looking for delusional affirmation—and going downhill.
